Despite rainy, wet weather, the 1936 Highway Patrol Building in Rockwood was formally dedicated during the morning hours of June 3rd. Approximately 175 people braved the inclement weather to attend the event.
Commissioner Fred Phillips, Department of Safety, was the keynote speaker and was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Tom Moore, Colonel Lynn Pitts, and Lt. Col Larry Rucker, all top law enforcement officials from the State of Tennessee.
After guests were seated by members of Boy Scout Troop 106, opening remarks by Judy Wassom, Rockwood 2000 president were given. The ceremony opened with a raising of the colors by the Tennessee Highway Patrol Color Guard. Guest speakers included Mayor Mike Miller, Rockwood, former Senator Annabelle O'Brien, State Senator Tommy Kilby, Representative Dennis Ferguson, and Roane County Mayor Ken Yager. The museum was officially opened by a ribbon cutting, and on display were antique patrol cars, a rollover demonstration vehicle and other high tech innovations.
The museum will be open for special events such as the annual Rockwood Fall Festival, the Rockwood 2000 Christmas Homes Tour and is available for field trips by scheduling in advance with J.W. Cisson at (865) 354-0555.
